With a staff including some of the top names in English football, Show Racism the Red Card has been making a big impact across the UK. SRTRC Ireland’s Eoin Mc Cafferty went to find out and tells us about his visit to the anti-racism project on Tyneside.

Shaka Hislop who was the first choice goalkeeper at Newcastle United in 1995, was the instigator of the campaign, after he had been racially abused at the local shell station near the team’s home ground. Since then the organisation has grown hugely and now has a large team of workshop leaders and ex professionals from the game with the list having key players of their time like Gary Bennett and Dublin born John Anderson.

Arrival in Newcastle and getting a ticket for the big derby game with Sunderland

Departing Dublin Airport at 6am on Sat morning was certainly difficult but now that I look back it was definitely well worth the effort. I arrived in Newcastle at 9:30pm and did what any sports enthusiast would do and went straight to see St James Park home to Newcastle United football club and club legends.

The remainder of Saturday was all about seeing the city and the sights that the beautiful city has. Sunday on the other hand was crazy. For those of you who follow sports, you will know how big a local derby match is and how much everyone wants to be there and I was no different.

I arrived into St James metro station at 9am and the hunt began for the elusive ticket that would get me entry to the match between Newcastle and their bitter rivals Sunderland. For 2 and a half hours there was nothing and when there was the tickets they were going for £100-£120, just as I was giving up hope, with 10mins to go a gentle man came up and asked was I looking for a ticket as he had a spare one because his son was sick. Needless to say I gave him his offer of £35 and I was off to the game.

The atmosphere was great and surprisingly the game was played in good spirits but unfortunately Newcastle lost 3-0 at home. All that said it was a great experience and I enjoyed it, it was then off to meet some of the guys from SRtRC HQ and catch up.

School visit

Monday was when the real work started and I was collected by the wonderful Laura Pidcock of the SRtRC team for a visit to a primary school in Percy Main. We did class workshops with the kids and dealt with all the key issues of racism and how the kids can help to combat it and make their society a better place.

The kids appeared to be very well informed and knowledgeable on the topic as they had previously watched the DVD.

Ex- Irish International coaching kids

After the classroom education workshop with Laura, I joined John Anderson an ex Ireland and Newcastle player outside for a fun fitness and coaching education workshop.

The session reinforced the information and knowledge that had been taught in the class earlier in the day as well as giving the kids a chance to ask John questions about any discrimination he experienced while playing and any other sports related questions from his lengthy career with Newcastle United.

Training the teachers

Monday evening myself and Laura led a Twilight teacher training session where the teachers were brought through a similar type of workshop as the kids but the emphasis was on the teachers been able to facilitate and lead an anti-racism class section and help the youths to best understand the whole topic and how we can eliminate it in society.

Back to St James Park but this time with the right result

Tuesday was a very interesting day the guys had organised an event at St James Park the home of Newcastle United Football Club. The event was set up as a young journalist’s event where the kids had to set up their own paper and write an article on racism in society. The day entailed the kids arriving early in the morning and the guys leading workshop based activities that helped the kids to get a better understanding of the area of racism and how they can help to combat it.

Star players support Show Racism the Red Card

The workshops were also attended and co-facilitated by ex Newcastle United players such as John Anderson, Olivier Bernard and Richard Offiong, as well as former Sunderland AFC stalwart Gary Bennett, Crystal Palace legend Dean Gordon and former Cambridge United and Leicester City striker Trevor Benjamin. Their hands on and game environment experience added the kids in seeing the consequences of racism in society and sport.

Kids as journalists

Through the education workshop, pupils took notes and then final event was due to take place. A panel of special guests was introduced and the kids took the role usually taken by journalists. They would stand up and give the name of their paper, school and then ask one of the special guests a questions.

The panel included (see pic above) Ex Professionals and the panel were also joined by Show Racism the Red Card volunteer and Newcastle United blogger Natasha Bougourd as well as special guests Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Massadio Haidara from the Newcastle United first team squad. The kids were then sent home to write an article for the competition with the winner to be decided later and the winner would receive a football signed by the current Newcastle United squad. The day was a great success and the kids finished off by getting autographs from the entire panel and all went home happy.

Working with hard to reach young people

My Final day in Newcastle with the Show Racism the Red Card crew was doing a youth group workshop at Morpeth Football Club with 3 of the SRtRC guys (Laura, Lizz and Olivier). The group was made up of youths who had been excluded from schools so were been educated externally from the main stream education system. I was informed prior to the workshop that the group would be challenging but that the workshop would be very good and I would learn a lot.

It was great to see a totally different environment from a class and see that the workshops are universal and it doesn’t matter where you do it the results are almost identical. It was great to see the kids also take on board all of what was been presented and there was a lot of learning and belief in what was been said and I feel the kids went away feeling very good and better informed on what racism is and what they can do to tackle it.

All in all it was a great few days in Newcastle and I would like to thank everyone at Show Racism the Red Card in Newcastle and all the ex professionals and current professionals. The trip was a great thing for me and I have come back here to Ireland with a greater understanding of all that is involved with the project and will be passing on all my knowledge to schools and youth services all over Ireland.

Shatter says “do not tolerate intolerance”

(Speech delivered by Minister for Justice & Defence Alan Shatter TD at the Creative Competition Awards Ceremony on April 10th at the AVIVA stadium.

Good afternoon everyone.

I want to begin by thanking Garret Mullan of Show Racism the Red Card for inviting me here today and providing me with the opportunity to view the excellent work on display. I am delighted to be involved in such an important initiative.

I also want to acknowledge the host of very talented young people here this afternoon. Regardless of the outcome today, you are all entitled to feel proud of your hard work and achievements. I know that some of you have travelled long distances to be here today which clearly demonstrates your enthusiasm and commitment to this project.

I would also like to thank the sports men and women who have attended and participated today – Kevin, Jason, Cliodhna, Indira, Eoin and Philip – you are great role models for the young people here and your presence helps to publicise this project.

The high quality of the entries received in this project tells us that creativity is alive and well and shows that there is a wealth of talent to be harnessed in our schools and young communities all around the country. I would particularly like to commend the dedication of all the teachers and others who have worked so hard to assist you all in preparing for today’s event. I hope you all enjoyed the experience of planning and working on your projects.

Show Racism the Red Card has been operating here in Ireland since 2006 and I am pleased that my Department has been in a position to provide funding to assist in the organisation of this very worthwhile competition. It is especially pleasing to note that the numbers participating in the competition have increased year on year with 140 schools and youth services taking part this year.

I think it is fair to say that, in general, Irish people have been warm and welcoming to the large number of EU and non-EU residents who have now made Ireland their home. We have, so far, avoided the extreme racial tensions that have emerged in other countries. However, we must not become complacent and we must be alert to the potential danger of the emergence of racial discord. That is why your participation in projects such as this is so important, in that it harnesses your talent and enthusiasm to demonstrate that, as a society, we will not tolerate racism in any form whether it is in sport, in our schools, in places of employment or in the social arena.

Raising awareness among you, our young people, in our schools, communities, sporting and social organisations is extremely important. You all know that racism has no place in Ireland or in any country or society.

From your work on the projects that brought you all here today, you will have learned more about the affect racism can have on individuals and communities. You will be aware that racism denies people their basic human rights, dignity and respect. It is a complex issue and can be manifested in a number of ways ranging from acts of snubbing, bullying and exclusion through to discrimination, stereotyping, institutional or systemic racism, to acts of verbal abuse, threatening behaviour and violence. It is up to each and every one of us to play our part in confronting racism and in ensuring that we do not support or condone it in our schools and communities.

My Department, through the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration, has a cross-Departmental mandate to develop, lead and co-ordinate integration policy across other Government Departments, agencies and services. However, for integration to be really effective there must be a “grass roots” approach. By that I mean, that integration policies and practices must be pursued in the community, in the home, in the workplace and in the schools. That is why your participation in this competition is particularly welcome as it brings awareness of the need for tolerance into our schools and from there to homes and to the wider community. It is important that you pass on the lessons you have learned through your participation in this project to the people that you meet as you go about your daily lives. My one simple message is, do not tolerate intolerance. We should celebrate difference, not target or discriminate against any individual perceived to be different.

Most of you will be aware that, on the 21st of March last – which was the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination – the world commemorated an event that took place in Sharpeville, South Africa in 1960 where Police opened fire on a peaceful demonstration against racially discriminating laws in Sharpeville. By designating a day to commemorate this horrific event, attention is regularly focussed on the need to fight against racial discrimination, wherever and whenever it occurs. The theme for this year’s commemoration is “Racism and Sport”. This theme, which was chosen by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, serves to highlight the problem of racism in sports as well as raising awareness of the role sports can play in combating racism and racial discrimination.

On any given weekend throughout the country it is clear to the observer that sport plays a huge part in peoples lives, including in the lives of the new migrant communities in Ireland. The composition of local soccer clubs, GAA clubs, basketball clubs and others shows the great diversity of cultures of both, young and old, coming together to share in the enjoyment of sport and, of course, in the hope of winning a trophy or two to share with the wider community.

Given the importance of sport in bringing communities together, my Department has provided funding to major national sporting organisations to assist them in integrating migrants into their activities. This opens up pathways to the involvement of newcomers in Irish society. Over the last five years, the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration has provided funding of almost 13 million euro for integration purposes. Almost 2 million of this sum was provided to national sporting organisations.

Finally, I would like to say that, it appears to me that the judges had a very difficult job in choosing the winners given the excellent standard of the entries. It is clear that a huge effort was put into the work and the entries were created with great enthusiasm. I hope that what you have learned through your participation in this competition about the dangers of racism and the devastation it can cause to individuals will be carried with you into the future. Again, congratulations to all who took part in the project.

Thank you.

Speaking at the event, Garrett Mullan, Coordinator of Show Racism the Red Card, said: “While racism is an issue in Ireland, young people are well placed to challenge it. Today’s event showcases the good work that is being undertaken in schools and youth services throughout the country. Young people and their teachers and youth workers have travelled from as far afield as Cork, Limerick, Leitrim, Monaghan and elsewhere to be here today. This is a real testimony to their commitment to the anti-racism message.”

Show Racism the Red Card is an anti-racism charity, which was founded in the UK in 1995, with a £50 donation from Newcastle United’s Shaka Hislop. The Irish branch was established in 2006. The aim of Show Racism the Red Card is to harness the high profile of sportspeople to combat racism. The organisation works to produce anti-racism educational resources, and to educate young people through workshops, summer camps and coaching activities. Show Racism the Red Card recently launched its new education pack for use in schools and learning environments around Ireland. The pack features top stars of Irish sport and young people relating their views on racism so as to promote an educational message to challenge racism. It was launched at Croke Park with the support of the GAA.
Some excellent work was done at schools and services throughout the country. It is so heartening that not only was there great quality of work through the entries created but that the impact went beyond the school/ service and into the local community.
Some excellent work was done at schools and services throughout the country. It is so heartening that not only was there great quality of work through the entries created but that the impact went beyond the school/ service and into the local community. Furthermore it was great to hear ‘the kids really enjoyed it’ yet at the same time they worked to address a serious issue.

The title of the competition ‘Creative Competition’ is purposely to encourage creativity because as the world becomes more complex, the challenges demand creative and imaginative responses. Creativity is testing for those involved.

Some of the audiovisual entries are already online at www.youtube.com/theredcardire

There are some incredibly talented young people in Ireland from the girls are Our Lady of Mercy who made their own film to the boys and girls at Castaheany Educate Together who made their own version of the Gangnam style song but with anti-racism lyrics. Some of the entries demonstrate particular talents for example with Poppintree Youth Project in film making and Scoil Brid Naomh in mosaics.

Pupils at some schools such as Mullingar Educate Together and Colaiste an Craobhain got their whole schools involved, while Plas Mhuire Boys National School and Scoil Brid Naofa developed very strong entries over the course of months. Other schools such as Scoil Choilm and Blakestown Community School made use of our our mascot ‘Jeff the Ref’ in bringing their anti racism message to the school and community.

Organisers of the Creative Competition are keen to build on the experience. While the numbers involved have increased over the four years since 2010, Show Racism the Red Card is open to ideas as to how to increase the breadth and depth of the programme in years to come.

All those who participated in the Competition will be receiving a free new copy of the updated Show Racism the Red Card education pack. This is in appreciation of the support f teachers and others in education in driving the anti racism message. It is hoped that he new education pack will be a valued resource in education over the next three years.

The education pack is closely related with competition says Co-ordinator Garrett Mullan: ‘The new pack includes work from Scoil Naomh Brid, Blakestown Community School, St Eunans National School because we value the work that is being done but also they show what is possible in any school and the point of education pack is that it is a quality resource to be used in any education environment’.

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that International Soccer legend and Ireland’s third most capped player Kevin Kilbane will be among the special guests attending the awards ceremony.

The new DVD features top stars of Irish sport and young people relating their views on racism in society and their thoughts on how to respond.

Among the players featuring on the new DVD are Ireland soccer stars Simon Cox, James Mc Carthy, Seamus Coleman, Sean St Ledger, Darren Randolph and David Meyler and from the Ireland Under 19s women’s team Rihanna Jarrett and FAI Cup Final Referee Neil Doyle. From GAA, we have Dessie Farrell of the Gaelic P layers Association, Barry Cahill and Cliodhna O’ Connor of the Dublin Men and Women’s Senior Football teams. We also have an indepth interview with rising star from Wexford hurling and football Lee Chin, who relates his experiences of racism, while Ireland and Leinster legend Sean O’ Brien makes an appearance too.

The DVD features strong contributions from teacher Ms Mc Monagle and pupils from St Eunan’s National School in Raphoe who tell the story of how they made the winning entry to the 2012 Creative Competition, while young people from Adamstown Community College and Blakestown Community School also feature.

In addition to the pack, there are also downloadable activities which can support classroom learning. These activities are downloadable from www.theredcard.ie/teachers.php

Anti Racism Online course to launch

To support use of the education pack and to raise awareness within soccer, we are devising two online courses which will be accessible on our website. The course will be short and completion of the course will enable the user to get a free DVD education pack.

Irish language resources to launch

With support from An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta, we are near completion with the production of Irish language resources including the DVD, education pack and a website with downloadable activities.

Intercultural Summer Camp

We have taken delivery of brochures for our 2013 Intercultural Summer Camp. We hope that it will be the best ever.

We have already volunteer applications internationally from Russia, Georgia and Spain. We are now recruiting for Irish based volunteers to make up our compliment.

If you are interested in sending your child or in the camp as a volunteer opportunity , please check out details on the camp page. www.theredcard.ie/camp.php

Upcoming

As well as the awards ceremony at the AVIVA stadium, we are also planning to launch the DVD in Wexford. Among those from Wexford who feature in our new DVD are Wexford Youths and Ireland U19’s Rihanna Jarrett and Dualstar Lee Chin.

We will also be hosting training for trainer sessions with people who may use the pack. We want to build up a community of users of our educational resource. The training will give participants the knowledge and competence to deliver activities within the education pack. Please subscribe to our newsletter to get information about this course.

We are still hard at work to complete the production of our education resources. The next stage is the launch of our online course. There will be two courses available from our website. One will be targeted to those involved in FAI affiliates, and it aims to raise awareness of racism and how to respond to it within sport.

The second course is to be made available to teachers, youth workers and those in education. This course aims to raise awareness of what is racism and how to respond but also how to deliver activities to educate young people about racism.
