Show Racism the Red Card was at the Summer Jam in the National Basketball Arena. The Summer Jam integration programme was the stage to launch two Show Racism the Red Card posters. One is a picture of the Irish Men’s team with a calender of key dates in Irish Basketball. The other poster features top stars of Irish Basketball. The purpose of the Summer Jam is to promote participation of ethnic minorities in Ireland in Irish Basketball. With support from the Department of Justice, Basketball Ireland was able to provide an extremely attractive programme for participants. At each regional event, children participating were given a free basketball at the end of a day coaching and playing. The also got a free t-shirt and lunch.The highlight of the programme was the finals event where participants were joined by NBA legends Calvin Booth and Roger Mason jr. Playing in the top league of the NBA with the Washington Wizards, the two players were on hand to give coaching tips to youngsters attending.
Roger Mason jr took questions from youngsters in a highly entertaining session in which he endeavoured to satisfy the curiousity of the young people about the stars of US Basketball. He also spoke about the benefits of Basketball to promoting integration. He said it is an international sport and even if people do not speak the same language they can speak the language of Basketball.
The Show Racism the Red Card posters serve to raise the profile of the top stars of Irish Basketball in the Super League. the calender provides a useful resource of key events including the launch of the Men and Women’s Super League, the Schools cup and National Basketball Cup as well as upcoming International games.
