Helping teachers tackle racism through training

462 people have taken our online training.
In October and November 2016, our Education Development Worker Sara Hakim delivered Anti Racism training workshops to over 500 student teachers from St Pats DCU, Marino Institute of Education, Mary Immaculate College and also to Freobel College at NUI Maynooth.

Many of the students have taken the online teacher training course at http://training.theredcard.ie

The course takes the learner through:

  • What is racism
  • How it happens
  • How it impacts
  • How to respond
  • Activities teachers or other educators can deliver in the classroom or PE hall to promote anti racism learning

It concludes with the learner writing their own statement about what they have learnt. During the course, they are encourage to keep notes, so as to ensure a good learning experience.  Below is just a flavour of the feedback we have received from the student teachers. Continue reading

Club Welcome for Refugees

Last July, we received funding to roll out a pilot project we have entitled as ‘Club Welcome’, which is aimed at increasing participation in sport on the part of those from refugee/ asylum seeker backgrounds.

Club Welcome promotion poster

To date, we have clubs in Dublin, Laois, Limerick, Sligo and Westmeatn participating and each are at different stages. Initially, we established a stakeholder group to advise us on how best to engage in the programme. Attending the meeting were representatives from sports governing bodies, local sports partnerships and refugee groups too. Arising from this meeting, a rough plan of engagement was developed to oversee the implementation of the programme.

In response to the circulation of the poster promoting the programme, we received expression of interest forms and informal inquiries from accommodation centres, people working with asylum seekers and from asylum seekers themselves.

We then met with clubs and potential participants in each location, Athlone, Clonakilty, Clondalkin, Laois and Sligo to discuss how the programme would work in each area. Each programme has a different plan because clubs are different and the accommodation centres are different. Some have large numbers of children such as Clondalkin and Athlone, while others have only adults such as Clonkilty and Emo in Co Laois, while Sligo have a mix of adult and children asylum seekers.

The club welcome programme is designed to recognise and award clubs for good practice in including refugees/ asylum seekers in their activities. It is envisaged that like the Green flag for schools, which awards schools who do things for the environment, the club welcome plaque will be presented at the conclusion of the club’s activities with refugees/ asylum seekers.

As part of the programme, we are allocating funds for each of the participating clubs to implement their activities. Finance for the clubs is important we believe because finance is a crucial barrier to participation in sport.

It’s Wear Red Day against Racism this Friday 25th November #WRD16

Minister David Stanton to celebrate Show Racism the Red Card’s Inaugural Wear Red DayMinister of State for Justice with special responsibility for Equality, Immigration and Integration, David Stanton TD, will be attending a special event at Midleton Educate Together School, Midleton, Co Cork to mark Show Racism the Red Card’s inaugural Wear Red Day. The Minister will be attending the school at 11am Friday, 25th November to mark the occasion.dsc_0008 dsc_0010 dsc_0031Pictured: Castaheany Educate Together hosted their Wear Red Day one week early last Friday.  As well as wearing red, the school collected donations for Show Racism the Red Card.  They made red themed pizzas and also hosted a school assembly attended by our Mascot Jeff the Ref on the theme of Respect.

Show Racism the Red Card has been encouraging schools, businesses and community organisations to wear red on Friday to help raise much needed funds for the charity. All funds raised through Wear Red Day will be used by Show Racism the Red Card to continue to challenge racism through providing education resources, programmes and intercultural activities which support integration.

Show Racism the Red Card will be delivering a presentation on tackling racism at Midleton Educate Together, with the students decked out in red to support Wear Red Day. Commenting in advance of Friday’s event, Garrett Mullan, Coordinator of Show Racism the Red Card, said: “Forty-six per cent of teachers say they have witnessed racism in the classroom, so by holding Wear Red Day we’re highlighting the need for racism to continue to be tackled in schoolyards and playgrounds all over Ireland and for integration to be promoted. We’re delighted with the response to our first Wear Red Day and hope it will become a staple in calendars throughout Ireland in years to come.”

Also commenting in advance of Friday, Minister of State for Justice with special responsibility for Equality, Immigration and Integration, David Stanton TD, said: “I’m delighted to be supporting this very important initiative by Show Racism the Red Card. With Ireland becoming an increasingly multicultural society it is of utmost importance that integration is promoted at all levels, and I’m particularly delighted to see a Cork school in my own constituency coming on board to celebrate Wear Red Day.”Show Racism the Red Card are encouraging participants to share their activities on social media using the hashtag #WRD16.For further information on the initiative, please visit http://www.theredcard.ie/.
